What to Do When You Feel like Giving Up

So far 2020 has kicked my ass!

Our fence broke. Our pool emptied out. Our tenants vacated our condo pretty suddenly, although I understand their circumstances. My mom was sick. My dryer broke.

And….. we had a leak in our house that dripped down to my gym.

Oh. My. Goodness. People. Let me tell you…. I was losing my shit!

What happened?

My routine took a hit. My exercise took a back seat. My “me time” went out the window. I wasn’t sleeping well.

And of course, I felt stressed. Like really stressed.

Impatient with my girls. Snappy with my husband. Craving junk food. Wanting lots of wine (like lots of it). All the things.

Early this week I found myself actually saying out loud, “Are you f#@king with me?”

But….. no one answered, lol. I had to step back and ask myself: “What would I tell my friend in this situation?” and “How would I help a client through this?”

What did I do?

I took a day to myself to breathe and get my shit together.

I dropped my kids off at school and sat with a notepad and my coffee and just wrote: lists of what I needed to take care of, lists of how much money it would cost. Then I made a more important list: the things I can control, and the things I can’t.

With a little more clarity and perspective, I was able to take action.

I had to remind myself that STRESS IS TEMPORARY! And the way I handle it is always up to me.

Freaking out, crying, yelling, whatever response is okay, it just can’t be the only response.

What to do when stress takes over…

Next time life throws a bunch of crap my way, I’ll remind myself of how to handle things better. (Although I hope like hell that it’s not any time soon). So, here’s what I’ll do:

  • Feel all the feels in real-time. Stop trying to hold it all in.
  • Gain perspective. Remember: stress is temporary!
  • Prioritize what you can handle, and let the rest take a back seat for a while.
  • Remind yourself that you can’t take care of other people if you don’t take care of yourself. Continue your routine as best you can.
  • Workout. Not for weight purposes, but for sanity.
  • Get some zzz’s. Exhausted people are not very productive.
  • Focus on something you are grateful for. Every. Single. Day.

We will always have stressors. But we will also always have a choice. Choose patience. Choose Gratitude.

Choose you.

For now…. I’ll be sipping on some tea and feeling ever so grateful that I made it through the longest January of my life, and came out on top!
